On 29 March 2024, the Consulate-General of Thailand in Kolkata, together with SKÅL International Kolkata, an organisation promoting tourism industry, Tourism Authority of Thailand New Delhi Office (TAT New Delhi), and Thai Airways Kolkata Office, jointly celebrated Songkran Festival (Thai Traditional New Year) in Kolkata at Pride Plaza Hotel Kolkata. The festival was joined by 70 participants being representatives from local public sector, travel agents, tourism influencers, and media.

The festival was the collaboration between Thai public and private sectors with Indian partner organisation to host Songkran Festival in Kolkata for the first time. It was aimed to promote Songkran Festival in Thailand to become more widely known as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity recently inscribed by the UNESCO. Moreover, in 2024, the Royal Thai Government also announced the grand celebration of Songkran Festival across the country from 1 – 21 April 2024 with an aim to elevate it to a world-class event.
