On 14 November 2022, Ms. Acharapan Yavaprapas, Consul-General of Thailand in Kolkata, attended the Golden Jubilee Celebration of Nehru Children’s Museum and gifted two Thai crafted dolls to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of the Museum and the 75th Anniversary of the establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Thailand and India .
This Golden Jubilee Celebration coincides with the 133rd Birthday Anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, after whom the country of India celebrates Children’s Day on his birthday. The said event was attended by Shri Firhad Hakim – Mayor, Kolkata Municipal Corporation and other dignitaries from diplomatic corps.
On this occasion, Consul-General delivered her speech extending congratulations as well as recognizing the tireless effort of the museum in promoting awareness and education for young generation through cultural lens. She also highlighted the strong cultural linkages between Thailand and India which is evident in the dolls gifted by the Royal Thai Consulate-General. The first set of dolls presented to the Museum was 20 Thai crafted dolls depicting the ‘Ramakien’, the Thai version of the great Ramayana epic. Other dolls were also gifted in the years 2001 and 2019 depicting aspects of Thai culture like lifestyle, traditional clothing from different regions of Thailand and also Thai dance forms. With this year’s additional doll contribution, the Nehru Children’s Museum houses around 30 Thai crafted dolls. Consul-General reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment to enhance cooperation and promote people-to-people ties.
Nehru Children's Museum was established by National Cultural Association on
14 November 1972 as a tribute to Jawaharlal Nehru. The museum draws tourists and children from all over the country and overseas for its fascinating archives. The Doll and Toy gallery is a major attraction for the children as it houses pieces from across the globe, another attracting feature is the miniature model depicting the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Nehru Children's Museum is considered a favourite tourist landmark of Kolkata.
