The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and the Thailand Foundation will award the Public Diplomacy Award 2023 to an individual, group or organization in recognition of their role or the activities they have undertaken, which have contributed to Thailand’s public diplomacy in an exemplary manner. Namely, these are actions or activities that have cultivated strong relationships and promoted greater awareness and understanding at the people-to-people level, as well as contributed to nurturing and showcasing Thailand and the distinct characteristics of Thailand and the Thai people in a way that cultivates an appreciation for Thailand and the Thai people at the international level Thailand.
The Public Diplomacy Award aims to:
- Honor individuals, groups or organizations working for public benefit in areas such as the humanitarian, cultural, sports or innovation domain, who have been successful in achieving the recognition of and appreciation for Thailand, ‘Thainess’ and the Thai people, at the international level.
- Encourage the awardees to continue with their work as intended, while serving as a strong example and role model for other individuals, groups and organizations to follow suit.
- Support and foster awareness among all individuals, groups and organizations, of the importance of taking an active part in advancing public diplomacy, as it will play an important role in promoting the various distinct qualities and characteristics of Thailand and the Thai people and help to amplify positive energy and support recognition of Thailand’s ‘soft power’ at the international level.
Details and nomination requirements for individuals, groups or organizations to be considered for the Public Diplomacy Award 2023:
Number of Awards
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Thailand Foundation will grant 1-3 Public Diplomacy Awards for the year 2023 to selected Thai or foreign individuals, groups and organizations.
Qualifications of candidates
- Must be individuals, groups or organizations who have undertaken activities contributing significantly to Thailand’s public diplomacy, through fostering a strong and positive representation of Thailand, ‘Thainess’ and the Thai people among people around the world.
- Must have a good record of behaviour
Qualifications of those submitting nominations
- Individuals, groups or organizations can nominate themselves or other people, groups or organizations. In the case of nominating others, the consent of the candidate is required.
- Royal Thai Embassies, Permanent Missions of Thailand and Royal Thai Consulates-General are entitled to present candidates.
Award details
- The awardee’s name will be inscribed on the “Goodwill” trophy, which will be displayed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sri Ayutthaya Road.
- Another trophy with the inscription of the name of the awardee will be presented to the awardee.
- The awardee’s name will also be inscribed on the “Wall of Fame” which is displayed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sri Ayutthaya Road
- A Certificate of Honor will be presented to the awardee.
- Prize money totaling 300,000 Baht/prize will be given to the awardee.
Selection Process
The Sub-committee on the selection of candidates for the Public Diplomacy Award 2023 is appointed by the Board of the Thailand Foundation. The Sub-committee consists of 9 representatives, including high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, the Secretary-General of the Thailand Foundation, representatives from academia, civil society, and the media will convene to shortlist the candidates as nominated and submit to the Board of the Thailand Foundation for a final decision.
Timeline
- The nomination period runs for three months, from 1 May to 31 July 2023.
- The Sub-committee on the selection of candidates for the Public Diplomacy Award 2023 will convene to shortlist the candidates in August 2023.
- The Board of the Thailand Foundation will convene to make a decision on the winners of the Public Diplomacy Award 2023 by September 2023.
- The award ceremony will be announced thereafter.
