Held for the first time in Bodhgaya, the four-day celebration marked a significant milestone in strengthening unity and solidarity among the Thai community in India, especially in Bodhgaya, while sharing Thailand’s rich cultural heritage with the Indian public and pilgrims from around the world. Through vibrant displays of authentic Thai cuisine, traditional arts, and cultural performances, the event brought the essence of “Thainess” to the sacred land of the Buddha’s Enlightenment.

The timing of the event was especially meaningful. March is the peak pilgrimage season in Bodhgaya, and 3 March 2026 coincided with Makha Bucha Day, one of the most important Buddhist holy days. This auspicious occasion provided a profound opportunity for the Thai community to come together in merit-making, spiritual reflection, and collective activities that reaffirmed Thailand’s enduring commitment to Buddhism and its close ties with India and the international Buddhist communities.

The event received generous support from Thai government agencies and private sector partners, including the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Thai Trade Office in New Delhi, Thai Airways International, Thai President Foods, Global Power Synergy Public Company Limited (GPSC), and Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited. Equally instrumental were Thai volunteers and members of the Thai community residing in Bodhgaya, as well as representatives from various Thai temples, who devoted their time and efforts to preparing traditional Thai dishes and ensuring the event’s success. Mr. Shri Shashank Shubhankar, IAS, District Magistrate of Gaya, also attended and visited the event.

Organized in the lively spirit of a traditional Thai temple fair, the program featured a diverse array of activities. Highlights included Dhamma talks by Thai and international monks who had participated in the “Walk for Peace” in the United States, online Dhamma discussions with monks in and from Thailand, alms offering ceremonies, group meditation sessions, Thai food and products showcases, hands-on workshops on Thai handicrafts, and captivating cultural performances. The event welcomed international monks and pilgrims, representatives of local authorities, and members of both the Thai and Indian communities, fostering dialogue, friendship, and mutual respect.

Beyond celebrating culture, “Namaste Thailand @ Bodhgaya 2026” also strengthened networks within the Thai community in India and enhanced goodwill and cooperation with the local Indian and international Buddhist communities. The event served as a meaningful people-to-people diplomacy initiative, further deepening the longstanding bonds of friendship between Thailand and India.

The celebration followed a community outreach program under the theme “From Thailand with Heartfelt Love  for Bodhgaya”, held from 24–27 February 2026 in Gaya, Bihar. Under this initiative, the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Kolkata, in partnership with the Royal Thai Monastery, Bodhgaya, and GPSC, donated solar lighting units to four schools supported by Thai and Buddhist temples, as well as to one community in Bodhgaya. The beneficiaries included:

  1. Panchasila Public School
  2. Bodhikul School
  3. A school under the patronage of Wat Pa Dongkasiri
  4. Anand Vidya Peeth School
  5. Two solar lighting sets for a nearby community adjacent to Anand Vidya Peeth School

In addition to the solar light donations, the Consulate-General distributed school supply kits and lunch boxes to students, organized recreational activities, and conducted vocational skills training for teachers, students, and members of the local community. Training sessions included crochet making, flower garland crafting, broom making, and mushroom cultivation—practical skills designed to support household use and generate supplementary income.

Through its cultural celebration and community outreach efforts, “Namaste Thailand @ Bodhgaya 2026” reflected Thailand’s spirit of compassion, generosity, and friendship. The event not only celebrated shared Buddhist heritage but also strengthened enduring ties between the peoples of Thailand and India, laying a strong foundation for continued cooperation in the years to come.
